Merchandise Your Merchandise

As Holiday shopping season quickly approaches, many of us will be scouring the sales catalogs and brochures seeking the best deals on the latest trends. What is it that lures us into making these purchases? What makes these products or services seem extra special? It’s all about how companies merchandise their merchandise.

Just as companies approach advertising and promotions, we must all be cognizant of our personal branding. A recent article in Entrepreneur magazine, “The 5 Pillars of a Successful Personal Brand,” reminds companies of the importance in setting themselves apart from the competition. The following tips are just as important in establishing a personal brand.

  1. Presentation and timing is key. Build excitement and interest by presenting yourself and your materials in an appealing, well-designed and organized manner.
  1. Highlight your strengths. Your expertise and specializations make you a unique and valuable asset. Determine what you do well and capitalize on that.
  1. Keep going. Personal branding never stops and must remain constant, consistent and fresh.
  1. Get involved. “When you give something, you oftentimes get something greater in return.” Provide a sample or demonstration to support your personal brand pitch, and remain active with area professionals and your community to increase your visibility and outreach.

Whether you are trying to “wow” a prospective client, elevating yourself within a current position or seeking a new job opportunity, a proactive approach to personal branding is crucial. If you don’t establish your brand and merchandise your merchandise, who will?
