Social Media Club Knoxville takes a peek at UT football’s social media playbook

Knoxville, Tenn. – Since his first day at the University of Tennessee in early December, Coach Butch Jones has built the third-largest following on Twitter among major college football coaches, behind only LSU’s Les Miles and Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly. On Thursday, January 17, Social Media Club Knoxville (SMC Knoxville) is hosting a free program providing a behind-the-scenes look at how the UT Athletic Department built the game plan to become one of the most followed and discussed teams on social media. Jason Yellin, UT Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, will be the guest speaker. The free event begins with a 6 pm social hour at Calhoun’s restaurant on Volunteer Landing in downtown Knoxville, followed by Yellin’s presentation at 7 pm.

During his presentation, Yellin will show examples of how the UT football program is embracing social media to build interest in and excitement around the team. Yellin’s responsibilities within the Athletic Department include media relations, working with UTSports.com and the department’s social media efforts. Before joining the University of Tennessee Athletic Department Yellin had worked previously for the University of Massachusetts, the University of Maryland, ESPN and the New York Jets.

The presentation is part of SMC Knoxville’s “Local Talent” series featuring practical advice, skills and experience shared by local expert resources. SMC Knoxville is open to anyone with an interest in developing or sharing their skills in social media for business or personal use. About Jason Yellin: Jason Yellin is in his second year as the Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations at the University of Tennessee. He heads up the entire media relations unit and works with the football program on a daily basis. He is involved with UTSports.com as well as the department’s social media efforts. Yellin came to UT after seven years as the Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations at the University of Massachusetts. Prior to that, he worked at the University of Maryland and ESPN. He has also worked for the New York Jets and several minor league teams in addition to his alma mater Stony Brook University in New York.
