Wiseman Replaces Retired Medical Center Leader Dr. J Russell Langdon
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – July 24, 2020 – The University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) has named Dr. Brian Wiseman Vice President of the Brain & Spine Institute, one of the medical center’s seven Centers of Excellence. Wiseman’s new role is effective immediately as he replaces retired leader, Dr. J. Russell Langdon, who had worked at UTMC since 1984.
In his new position, Wiseman is responsible for providing strategic leadership to all stakeholders of the Brain & Spine Institute to achieve the medical center’s mission, vision and values. Additionally, he will continue to improve the quality and safety of care provided through the services of the institute and advance the scope and productivity of its research.
“I am excited about the opportunity to build on the successes within the Brain & Spine Institute,” said Wiseman. “My goal is to develop and grow programs which combine optimum patient care with an exceptional patient experience.”
Services provided by the Brain & Spine Institute include stroke treatment as a comprehensive stroke center, care for Alzheimer’s and other dementias through The Pat Summitt Clinic, wound care centers, rehabilitation services, the sleep center, the spine center, neuro oncology, and Cole Neuroscience Center, which treats conditions such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS and general neurology. Wiseman, a neurologist at the medical center, also serves as medical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center which he has done for the past 10 years.

Landsman, UTMC’s President and CEO. “Dr. Wiseman’s experience and dedication position him to be an excellent leader to advance the Brain & Spine Institute and to expand on the significant accomplishments made by Dr. Langdon in improving our care, research and safety.”
Langdon, an anesthesiologist, became vice president of the institute in 2017. In that role, he remained an associate professor with the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, as well as director of Neurocritical Care at the medical center. Additional positions of influence held by Langdon include medical advisor for the Brain & Spine Institute from 2011-2017, medical director of Surgical Critical Care Services from 2006-2011 and Chief of Staff at the medical center in 1997. Langdon was one of the founding members of the UHS Board and served on the UHS Board of Directors from 1999-2009.
