Mike Murray has been an active member of Knoxville’s hockey community for 30 years. He arrived in Knoxville to play with the ECHL’s Knoxville Cherokees for the 1989-1990 season. After spending five seasons with the Cherokees, he played 272 games and registered 295 points (125G – 170A). He also played for the Knoxville Speed of the UHL and the Knoxville Ice Bears.
Following his playing career, Murray became a member of the Knoxville Ice Bears ownership group in 2005 and took over as President and GM of the team in 2006. The Knoxville Ice Bears have won four SPHL President’s Cups during his tenure – 2006, 2008, 2009 & 2015.
For Murray, one thing he loves most about the Ice Bears are the supportive fans. “I love our fans; I love hearing from them. Even now in the summertime, ‘how are you guys doing?’, they just call to see how we’re doing.”
Murray is involved with the Change Center and most recently helped to design and build an ice rink for kids to use. He says being able to help organizations like the Change Center is what it’s all about.
He is also being inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and told us, “it’s incredible. When I got that phone call, it made me go numb for a little bit because the Hall of Fame in any situation is eternal. It’s like being in a movie. It made me reflect back on all the people who helped me get to this position now.”
