KNOXVILLE, TENN. – September 20, 2021 – The Salvation Army is consistently providing year-round hope and resources for those affected by domestic abuse for the Knoxville community and would like to shine a light on the issue during Domestic Violence Awareness Month for the month of October.
The Salvation Army takes an extensive approach to helping those escaping domestic violence situations by offering confidential emergency and transitional shelters where survivors and their children can sleep safely while receiving help and healing to begin living independently. After addressing any physical wounds with immediate medical attention, the Joy D. Baker Center at the Knoxville Salvation Army helps to heal the emotional scars of domestic violence through mental and spiritual counseling that puts men, women, and children on the path toward rehabilitation.
On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States which is equivalent to more than 10 million women and men per year. Since domestic violence is a pattern, many experience repeated acts of abuse, so an incident of abuse happens far more frequently than every three seconds. More statistics include:

• 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men experience sexual violence, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime with ‘IPV-related impact’ such as being concerned for their safety, PTSD symptoms, injury, or needing victim services.
• Approximately 1 in 5 female victims and 1 in 20 male victims need medical care. Female victims sustain injuries 3x more often than male victims.
• 2% of women and 13.9% of men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
• 19% of intimate partner violence involves a weapon.
• On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines nationwide receive over 19,000 calls.

The Cup of Hope is The Salvation Army of Knoxville’s signature event to raise funds for the Joy D. Baker Center and its mission of providing safety, shelter, and restoration; rebuilding lives and guiding survivors of domestic violence to a fresh new start to life.
